About Queens County Farm Museum
The Queens County Farm Museum is seeking two dedicated and environmentally minded Volunteer Composting Assistants to support our community compost program. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain practical experience in sustainable waste management and urban agriculture—ideal for students and individuals interested in environmental science, green space management, or sustainability initiatives.
The Opportunity
Volunteer Composting Assistants will work alongside our Compost Coordinator to help maintain and manage the farm’s community compost site. This role offers valuable, on-the-job training in composting systems and sustainable practices in an active, community-centered environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the daily operations of the community compost area
- Help receive and sort compost drop-offs from the public
- Support the maintenance and turning of compost piles
- Provide basic guidance and information to visitors about composting practices
- Ensure the compost site remains clean, organized, and safe
Qualifications:
- Interest in environmental science, sustainability, or urban agriculture
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to perform light to moderate physical tasks (lifting, turning compost, etc.)
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work collaboratively
- Comfortable engaging with the public in a friendly and informative manner

Hours & Compensation
Select Saturdays, 10am – 2pm. This a volunteer position.
